Back in January we featured the wonderful designs created by Staffordshire University third year students in response to our ‘Supporting & Inspiring Innovation within Education’ initiative. We were so overwhelmed by the standard of work and level of effort put into the brief by all of the students, however there were two students, who we felt had particularly embraced the brief and produced work of such a high commercial standard that meant the products could go to market immediately.

We commissioned Claire Mayes, who designed the paper Heart Lanterns during the brief (which can be downloaded from our site) to develop the theme further by creating further paper lantern designs and in response Claire has come up with these delightful paper Daisy Chain Lanterns.

Perfect for brightening up any room this summer or for using as decoration at a summer party or BBQ, the Daisy Lantern pack can be downloaded with free templates and instructions to cut around using our papers.
Here’s a sneak peak of some more work Claire has been working on for us including more lanterns and intricate paper cut floral panels. Watch this space!!

Another student who we felt produced an outstanding response to the brief was Laura Burger who designed this fun and funky caravan gift box!

Created using a selection of Inspire Me papers, Laura said “Working on this project was a real labour of love. I hand collaged each paper to create a funky crafted look and I feel this compliments my retro, hippy theme really well. The caravan gift box kit I dreamt up as my final product has been a great source of amusement!”

Inspire Me Papers has created a download from Laura’s original artwork so you too can create this fun gift box, it can be downloaded with free templates and instructions to cut around.
Below is a photograph of some of Laura’s future work in progress for Inspire Me Papers. This includes a range of paper flowers and paper cuts all with a romantic wedding theme.

Inspire Me has launched its ‘Supporting & Inspiring Innovation within Education’ initiative.

We began our exciting journey at the start of the new term in Sept 2010 with the support of Sarah Peart, course leader Staffordshire University BA (Hons) Surface Pattern Design Degree and Terry Brooke Head of Visual Arts, Sale Grammar School a specialist school in the visual arts & science.

The Inspire Me team visited both Staffordshire University BA (Hons) Surface Pattern final year degree students and Sale Grammar 6th Form A level Art students

After an inspirational tactile paper session and introduction into the wonderful world of paper and, students were set an Inspire Me design brief (detailed below) offering creative freedom to explore various possibilities working with patterns inspired by the Inspire Me portfolio the students then went onto create products using their own newly designed paper patterns.

We then arranged for the A level students ( work still in progress) to visit the degree students ( work completed) to view each others work. The degree students were able to help, guide, encourage and inspire the A level students giving them insight into possible future design study choices!

A win win inspiring experience for all concerned!

Debbie Wigglesworth Inspire Me Brand Manger comments

Working with Staffordshire University ’s final year Surface Pattern degree design students led by Sarah Peart has been incredible.

After presenting to the students and setting an Inspire Me design brief we had hoped to offer inspiration and creative freedom to explore creating patterns and products that could feature within the Inspire Me portfolio

We invited Angela Nickeas, freelance Inspire Me designer and former Staffordshire textiles graduate to be part of the project giving a presentation of her work experience to date and offering support to the students throughout the brief.

We had deliberately not set a ‘competition’ and my goodness are we glad that we didn’t – it would have been just impossible to select a single winner!

We had hoped that there may be one or two really good results – never did we imagine that each and every student would have performed to such a level that the entire studio was bursting with creative solutions beyond measure. Many of the students work was so well designed and executed that several designs and products could literally go straight to market.

Despite the exceptional standard quite possibly the single biggest rewarding factor that was so apparent was each student’s individual pride and excitement about their own work – which was truly a fabulous experience to encounter. It was quite overwhelming in fact!

It is very apparent that many of the students will ‘sail’ into industry and become prolific designers making a significant contribution in the world of design.

We await the final year degree show with great excitement!

We also await our visit to Sale Grammar with equal excitement when we view the students work in the New Year . Watch this space!

      The brief:
First select a colour group of between four and six papers from the Inspire Me Papers core range which will form the basis of your core collection. We would then like you to design four patterned papers for the scrapbook market to co-ordinate with your core palette based upon any theme and in any medium!

Working with your core collection and newly designed pattern create a further 4 patterns as an extension of the collection.

Each students work is shown below including their core colour collection selected from the Inspire Me portfolio.

      Rosemary De Beer:
Using a striking colour palette incorporating black with both candy and electric pink, Rosemary created a commercial set of scrapbook patterns based upon graphic floral motifs using CAD. She incorporated these with simple stripes and spots to create truly eye-catching and contemporary designs.

“I decided to set myself the challenge of designing my collection using CAD only. My ideas were 60s geometric patterns and I felt this was particularly suited to this working method.

I am very pleased with the results. I created many more than eight variations using CAD, it was difficult to choose from them all. The designs are funky and co-ordinate well. My collection would look great produced using ‘Inspire Me’ high quality papers.”

Amy Dransfield:
Amy’s scrapbook papers were incredibly delicate and beautiful. Incorporating a muted and sophisticated palette, Amy built up her patterns with a number of layers of paint and heat transfer which she worked into through scratching and rubbing to create texture and depth. Her patterns worked well as a collection, however, each piece was considered and would work equally as single pieces of framed art.

Lisa Hart:
Selecting a muted and sophisticated colour palette, allowed Lisa to develop a range of patterns aimed at the wedding and bridal market. Using a variety of vintage objects as her inspiration including lace, keys, tags and old stamps, Lisa created an impressive collection using collage which was a delicate, romantic and nostalgic.

Lorna Heap:
Lorna chose a natural palette from the Inspire Me colour range which combined tones of lemon, cappuccino and green with striking flashes of pink to create a range of eight patterns. These patterns were derived from images of roses, carnations and their petals and leaves and yet they felt modern and bold. Lorna made good use of scale and layout in her designs which would give versatility to the scrapbooker.

Rebecca Hogg:
Gained her inspiration from origami birds and folds and creases within paper to create a graphical and contemporary collection. Rebecca selected a strong core colour palette which incorporated tones of Tangerine and Rustic Orange with Ice and Slate Blue and used stylised, simplified bird motifs and combined these with graphical stripes and chequer board effects. Rebecca’s placements and layouts were strong and beautifully confident in their manner.

Julia Jowett:
Julia’s Inspire Me colour palette was highly sophisticated and incorporated tones of pale blue with Smoke Grey and brown. She had chosen to base her scrapbook patterns on bird forms and abstract motifs taken from museum artifacts. Her patterns were screen printed from beautiful hand drawn images and had a quirky loose, illustrative feel to them.

Sarah Wheatley-Jones:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the brief given to me by Inspire Me papers. I took to the project straight away with much enthusiasm as I loved the thought of designing scrapbook patterned papers. I added my own personal touch to my project by using my Grandmas old postcards, which created a nice delicate vintage effect to my theme. I fashioned all my designs using collage/cut outs. I loved playing around with the colour palette I had chosen and also designing lots of different layouts. I have found every second of this project liberating and found myself thoroughly pleased.”

Dayna Kinnersley:
Dayna selected a monochromatic colour palette with highlights of red and yellow to create a series of scrapbook papers which derived inspiration from casinos and the bright lights of Las Vegas. Some of her patterns included imagery such as dice, cards, numbers and James Bond silhouettes! Dayna’s patterns would make a unique range of scrapbook papers for a masculine theme.

Megan Parry:
Megan’s work combined quirky, stylized drawings of both birds and fish in a fresh palette of blue, lemon, green and orange. Her patterns were modern and confident and used interesting layouts and placements which included corner placements and simple stripes. Megan also focused on sections of detail to create abstract patterns such as fish scales and bubbles. Her work incorporated areas of collage and stitch detail to add texture and depth.

Annalise Robins:
Annalise selected colours from the Inspire Me Papers range which were rich and traditional and complemented her chosen theme perfectly. Blues and golds were used to create her patterns which were based upon jewelry-in particularly cameo brooches. She drew her motifs by hand and then scanned these into Photoshop so she could experiment with layout and scale. Annalise’s patterns would make a beautiful sophisticated scrapbook range.

Katie Watson:
“My theme evolved from the colours I was drawn to in the Inspire Me Paper swatch book. The bright blues and greens along with a rich gold inspired my peacock designs and gave a sophisticated feel to my stylistic approach. Throughout the eight patterns, I tried to create a good balance between repeats and single motifs, making sure there was a sufficient range of directional and multi-directional designs to maintain a rounded collection. I used Photoshop and techniques such as omnichrom to produce my patterns. Overall I really enjoyed the project and think the brief was very suited to the Surface Pattern course.”

      The brief:
First select a colour group of between four and six papers from the Inspire Me Papers core range which will form the basis of your core collection. We would then like you to design four patterned papers for the scrapbook market to co-ordinate with your core palette based upon any theme and in any medium!

Working with your core collection and newly designed pattern create a range of stationery incorporating your patterns. This could include notebooks, gift tags, diaries for example and we would welcome the opportunity to see three-dimensional mock ups.

Each students work is shown below including their core colour collection selected from the Inspire Me portfolio.
      Charlie Locking:
Charlie’s funky patterns took their original inspiration from architectural detail which were then simplified into shape and form. Their retro feel was complemented by her chosen colour scheme of blue, orange and tones of cappuccino and mocha. Charlie’s extensive pattern range was developed into a series of luggage and gift tags in a variety of shapes and sizes which played with scale and placement. They have succeeded in being fashion led and yet practical.

Charlie has since been inspired to continue her interest and passion for paper by selecting the topic for her final dissertation.

Joanna Percival:
“I found this two week project really inspiring. It has made me think of giftware design as a possible career move for me in the future. I really enjoyed it. I liked working to a strict deadline as it made me use my time a lot more efficiently. I loved producing the patterned papers as I got to use the computers to produce my designs and then re-work into them. This made them less graphical and two dimensional, which I felt was more suitable for scrapbook papers. I chose to design and make a notebook/recipe book and was very pleased with the final outcome.”

Hollie Slater:
“Let's go for a picnic!
Grab your picnic baskets and flasks and take a trip to the park! My paper designs urge you to round up friends and family and make the most of the British summertime. This short project showed me what I can achieve in the space of just two weeks. I really enjoyed working on a smaller scale and discovering the potential of paper.”

Hollie selected a bright, summery colour range and combined this with our Woodland Pine for a really natural feel. She used whimsical icons such as ladybirds, jam jars and Coca Cola cans to create a variety of patterns which she turned into an experimental stationary range complete with recycled ring-pull fastenings! We were really impressed with Hollie’s work and particularly inspired by the ‘experience’ that is encouraged with her ideas.

Sarah Tanser:
“I found the brief for Inspire Me Papers truly inspirational. It presented all of us with a chance to deeply explore any themes we wished. I loved using Photoshop mixed in with a hand drawn element, allowing me to manipulate my designs to a professional looking finish. The opportunity that Inspire Me Papers has given me has been invaluable.”

Sarah designed a varied range of scrapbook papers based upon a nautical theme incorporating anchors, rope and a hibiscus floral. These were all completed using a sailor inspired colour palette consisting of red, blue and white. Her exquisite papers were used to cover an extensive range of notebooks which Sarah developed paying particular attention to detail such as bindings and pages.

Hollie Webster:
Hollie’s scrapbook papers were inspired by peacock feathers and Indian paisleys and had an intricate delicacy to them. Her line work and drawings were beautiful and sophisticated and each pattern had been carefully considered. Hollie selected a peacock inspired palette of rich blue and green to achieve this and used gold as a metallic highlight. Hollie produced a range of notebooks with her patterns which successfully combined pattern and colour.

Lucy Higginson:
“For my Inspire Me project I decided to do a woodland walk theme looking at creating stationery with an organic feel. I used maps and insects for inspiration for my patterned papers. I love my final designs which I created using mixed media techniques like sewing and collage. My papers would be perfect for those scrapbooking pages on days out or outdoor activities! I also created a key ring notebook with an inside pocket, large sketchbook and magazine rack covered with my multi-directional compass arrow design. I really enjoyed working with Inspire Me
Papers and feel I learnt a lot from the project. I look forward to working with them again in the near future!”

Aliysa Lee:
“My idea for this project is aimed at the male market. I want to create a range which is suitable for all ages as I feel that the market is missing a range which is in between child-teenagers-adults. I was inspired by robots and little quirky things such as the outlines of robots, silhouettes, shadows, tools and noises for robots. I have created a fun range of pattern design notebooks, which compliment each other and suit the male audience, varying from subtle to bold.”

First select a colour group of between four and six papers from the Inspire Me Papers core range which will form the basis of your core collection. We would then like you to design four patterned papers for the scrapbook market to co-ordinate with your core palette based upon any theme and in any medium!

Working with your core collection and newly designed pattern create a range of Wedding stationery which might include invites, place settings, menu cards and once again using your patterns to enhance this range.

“After being given the scrapbook brief, straight away I felt inspired and raring to go. I chose the wedding area purely due to the fact I didn’t have any clue what that particular industry was about and what is out there at the moment. I wanted to do something totally different and tap into an area I probably won’t come across again. I feel this made my work more original as I was not really influenced by today’s market. I thoroughly enjoyed the fast pace of the two-week brief and I have shocked myself in what I can do in that short amount of time. I would happily do a live brief for Inspire Me Papers again and I have gained so much more knowledge of another part of the industry.”

Natasha Rock:
“For the Inspire Me Papers project brief I decided to design papers for Wedding stationery using lace for the design ideas. The idea of using lace was inspired by Vera Wang, who is well known for her exquisite bridal designs. My aim was to create similarly delicate textured surfaces using techniques such as embossing, stencils and omnichrom. To achieve the feeling of quality, the papers I used were tracing, cotton and pearl embossed. I felt I achieved the result I was aiming for. I have really enjoyed working on the Inspire Me project brief and it has inspired me to continue designing papers, using a handmade technique rather than the popular digitally manufactured papers. I would love to add more designs to my wedding stationery collection in the future”.

We would then like you to design four patterned papers for the scrapbook market to co-ordinate with your core palette based upon any theme and in any medium!

Working with your core collection and newly designed pattern create an innovate greeting ‘card’. This may be a simple pop-up card or may be something as special as string of birthday bunting! We would like you to really ‘think outside the box!’ and create something that would be treasured and kept by the recipient.

      Anna Drezova:
Anna chose an autumnal colour palette with a traditional feel. Inspired by nature, in-particularly leaves and branches, Anna used her background as an Illustrator to develop a series of watercolour paintings which she scanned into Photoshop and manipulated to create various layouts. Her patterns were then used to create a greeting card and an incredibly intricate piece of paper engineering.

Reema Lad:
Reema’s core colour palette incorporated rich, jewel-like tones of pink, red, brown and zesty lime green with metallic gold highlights. Her patterns were Christmas themed and included quirky icons of holly and stars which she drew by hand and scanned into the computer. Reema used these patterns to create an innovative Christmas greeting card which could be cut out and made into a three dimensional tree ornament by the recipient. The tree decoration was in the shape of a star and incorporated all of Reema’s original icons and colours.

All immensely impressive including Reema’s use of graphics and attention to detail on the envelope inner.

“From the time I opened the ‘Inspire Me Papers’ module pack, I knew instantly I was going to love every minute of it! I loved the fact that the brief was open ended in the sense that you could really go to town with ideas. I chose to design a greetings card, as I wanted to concentrate more on the pattern aspects. This has definitely opened my eyes for possible career opportunities in this kind of industry in the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this project, and felt genuinely touched by Angela and Debbie’s encouraging feedback.”

      The brief:
First select a colour group of between four and six papers from the Inspire Me Papers core range which will form the basis of your core collection. We would then like you to design four patterned papers for the scrapbook market to co-ordinate with your core palette based upon any theme and in any medium!

Working with your core collection and newly designed pattern create a product from paper purely as a work of art or to be used as a piece of home décor incorporating your patterns.

“I found the two week project for Inspire Me Papers a really rewarding challenge. Working to such a short deadline made me really focus and put my ideas together very quickly. The papers were fantastic and the colours beautiful, and threw up so many possibilities that once I started working with them the ideas flowed”.

“Doing the Inspire Me project gave us an excellent start to our third year. I thoroughly enjoyed the two-week project and really enjoyed putting my patterned papers into my paper made roses. I am really inspired with the set of work I have produced and wish to follow the project on further with the ideas that the designers gave to me to push the project further. I really found the Inspire Me team inspiring and encouraging and very, very friendly. In conclusion I have really enjoyed this two-week project and would really like to thank Inspire Me Papers for giving us this opportunity to work with them.”

Sophie Jinks:
“My papers were lovingly hand collaged and layered with various techniques such as mono print and omnichrom”.

To compliment her retro patterns, Sophie had selected a colour scheme of brown, teal and orange and had combined this with our Woodland Pine card for a really funky finish. Sophie’s beautifully intricate papers were used to adorn a series of gift boxes which she had developed alongside a commercial manufacturer specifically for the brief which we felt was very entrepreneurial!

Claire Mayes:
“All my papers have been hand crafted using the Inspire Me Papers range. I chose a colour palette with a Valentines Day theme in mind, but what girl doesn’t love a bit of pink and a few hearts!! My almost "edible" fairy lights were also hand made with pin pierced paper allowing the light to shine through and a scalloped trim to add femininity. I hope you have enjoyed looking at my work.”

We certainly enjoyed looking at Claire’s work and have since chosen her heart lights for our new Inspire Me homepage and feature as a full page advertisement in Making magazine. A template for Claire’s heart lanterns can be downloaded free in our download section of the website and a Heart Lantern Kit with pre printed templates can be purchased from our Inspiration Packs section of the website.

Well done Claire!

Rachel West:
“I chose to base my scrapbook papers on citrus fruits and their decorative qualities. I thought that a fruit theme would be really successful - the imagery is exciting and there is wide popularity for fruit as it has a sense of energy, but also wholesome and natural qualities. Collage is a strong personal technique and so this was the way I chose to work. I found the weaving very therapeutic and satisfying. I also enjoyed dyeing papers and really experimenting with surface treatment. Overall a fabulous brief that I really got my teeth into!”

Michelle White:
“I found this brief truly ‘inspiring’! The colours, paper quality and freedom of choice was fabulous. I really enjoyed the two-week project and would have loved to take it further. FANTASTIC!”

Michelle selected a fresh funky range of colours from Inspire Me Papers which included Electric Pink, Apple Green and Electric Blue. She created a series of patterns based around a beautiful heart shaped jewelry pendent and focused on its scroll shapes and form. Michelle’s patterns were incredibly delicate and intricate and yet retained a modernity due to the colour palette. Michelle used these papers to create a series of gift boxes with added paper trinkets and charms!

Jessica Crooks:
"The amazing thing about this project was that it was wide open; we could pick ANY colours from the swatch and do ANY theme we wanted! This led to the studio being totally exciting and nothing in the room being the same.
Just looking though the paper swatches gave me a million ideas that went with all the different colours, but once I saw the Midnight Shimmer from the Iridescent collection, I knew that it was going to be my starting point.
From there it was just a super fun project that was full of experimentation and using different techniques. Not only am I really happy with the results, but it was a very fun two-weeks and a brilliant, chilled-out start to the third year."

      Laura Burger:
Created a retro, hippy inspired group of papers based upon a 1970’s colour palette of greens, oranges and browns combining florals, waves and spots. Laura used these papers to create a funky gift box in the shape of a caravan complete with a ‘how to’ kit.

“Working on this project was a real labour of love. I hand collaged each paper to create a funky crafted look and I feel this compliments my retro, hippy theme really well. The caravan gift box kit I dreamt up as my final product has been a great source of amusement!”

Jo Knight:
Jo selected a bright, primary palette to create her train inspired patterns for a children’s party. These patterns were then used to make a fabulous three-dimensional train and carriages which Jo created as an activity for children to make at a party.

"Choo Choo, all aboard the party train... This project opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of what you can do with paper. I had fun with the brief and produced a 3D product I was really pleased with. It has definitely inspired me for future ideas and hopefully this is just the beginning of my paper career."

Olivia Turner:
Olivia had selected a bright, young palette consisting of Electric Pink, Purple and Apple Green which were all pulled together with the use of Champagne Cream. Her scrapbook patterns were well considered and worked together as a coordinating collection. Olivia used her patterns to create highly innovative ‘gift card’ wallets and had made a number of prototypes which explored shape and form. Her wallets incorporated both the Inspire Me papers she had selected and her own patterns in different layouts and placements and proved the versatility of her papers. Olivia had also created a kit which included templates, tags and everything a customer would need in order to create these.
